Program Note:
A large family in Guangdong Province, scattered across the country and abroad by economic reforms, finally comes together for their first complete family portrait in over a decade. Through the director¡¯s lens, the individual stories of these family members become a microcosm for the immense changes that have taken place in China over the past thirty years, marking the decline of agrarian culture, the rise of the cities, increasing mobility and the persistence of old family values.
Director: In the old days, families treasured family trees as proof of their ancestry and birth; nowadays, we use images instead. The idea occurred to me to make a family tree out of images so that future generations can see their ancestors with their own eyes.
I wanted to present the members of my family and show the emotions that bind us as well as the irreversible changes social development has brought to our family.
