In his first experimental documentary, artist Lin Xin relates the story of a thousand-year old porcelain-making town located on China's Loess Plateau. Opening with a panoramic shot, the film has three chapters. The first chapter consists of ten one-sentence soliloquies by residents of all ages about what Chenlu means to them. 'Strength of Character'uses symbolism and dynamic images of clay spinning and pattern drawing to show the porcelain-making process and its timeless beauty. 'Local Conditions and Customs'looks at the town folk and their ways, as well as Chenlu's curious attraction: walls made from broken pieces of porcelain. The film uses an unwavering cinematographic eye and poetic language to leave a lasting image of a once bustling, now sleepy Chenlu whose traditions are slowly disappearing.
