In the mountains where the borders of Shaanxi, Gansu and Sichuan converge lives an interesting old man. Before the Communist Revolution he studied history at Sichuan University, and then he returned to his hometown and joined the Nationalist army. He can speak fluent English and was once a middle school teacher, as well as a Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) representative. Now he enjoys the tranquility of retirement. In this film he takes pleasure in telling us the story of his rough life. He lends a hand to his son in his shop and to anyone who comes and asks him to write couplets for special occasions such as weddings and funerals. He is such a talented couplet writer that his words flank the gates of each household in the village. This film pays tribute to the venerable old man.
