In 1974 the young Swedish photographer Mikael Wiström met Daniel Barrientos and his wife Nati working at the city dump in Lima , Peru . Wiström soon became a friend of Daniel, his wife and soon also the godfather of their first-born daughter Sandra. 1991, seventeen years later Wiström returns from Sweden to look for his still very poor friends. They have maintained contact through letters all these years, but never met again. The encounter is the story of a poor family struggling for survival and dignity. It is also a film about how a documentary filmmaker from a rich country has to face his own motives and the conflicts of poor and rich. T he O ther S hore is the first of two films telling the story of the Peruvian Barrientos family and their relationship with the Swedish director. C ompadre , made in 2004 is the second film.
