The Significance of Old Photographs in Environmental Awareness in Northwest Yunnan

In this program, Conservancy workers revisit areas already documented in early twentieth century (1900－1940) photographs taken by early Western explorers and scholars in Yunnan in order to document via photography the changes in the natural and cultural environment over the last century, thus creating a new field of photography—repeated photography. This new field consists of taking a landscape shot at the same time of year and from the same angle as a previous photograph of the site, then comparing the two prints and conducting a survey in order to reveal the changes in the physical and cultural environments and provide scientific data to guide local development projects.
