In June 1997, Ah Niu, a Tibetan resident of Wulongding Village (Deqin County), used his own savings and loans to found a Tibetan language school which offers free Ti betan classes to local children. The school has accepted 65 students, forming six classes ranging from grades 1 through 5. Other classes include Tibetan traditional medicine, Chinese language, English, Tibetan painting and dance. Despite the support of international organizations, the school still faces a number of problems. Nevertheless, Ah Niu refuses to give up and continues to contribute to the preservation of Khampa culture.
